In the last two days, watermelon prices have showed indications of a new upward trend. Mr. Fan, who presently buys watermelon in Liaoning, says that "the production quantity is the same as last year, and the quality isn't bad either. The buying price is at 2RMB/kg and should stay like that for two weeks until the open-air watermelons are harvested."

 

The watermelon price goes up because the domestic watermelon supply has shrunk. Reports say that watermelon cultivation grounds are near the end of their production season, except for those in Shandong province. Liaoning province, now in the middle of its watermelon production season, will become the main production region for market supply. According to Mr. Fan, "the production season in Liaoning can keep going for more than a month. Relying on indoor watermelons for now, the open-air watermelons should be ready to go on sale after two weeks if the temperature remains the same. In the End of July, beginning of August, the watermelons from Jilin province will be ready."

 

Because Liaoning is the only province in China that currently harvests watermelons, the supply is small and prices have gone up. When the open-air watermelons come on the market, the price may drop a bit. After July, the watermelon supply relies on the Northeastern regions.
